Complex Comforts

Right now I’m in a very complicated, though spectacular, hotel room. It’s lovely, make no mistake, and I am luxuriating in the amenities (cushy robe, complimentary slippers, billion threadcount sheets and thirsty bath towels. Don’t you love a thirsty towel?) But there is a strange air of unfamiliarity.

Everything in the room is so new that I can hardly make it function. The light switches are not switches but touch pads that respond to the gentlest of gestures. The telephone has a bunch of extra buttons that have caused me to keep cutting callers off. The in-room safe and coffee maker are state-of-the-art and may require extra study. There is a television that appears like a phantom inside the bathroom mirror. If you position your face just so…you can pretend you’re shaving Regis. None of this would phase a more seasoned traveller….or someone who was not too stubborn to ask a few simple questions.

This morning, while getting dressed, I finally felt I had a handle on things.

That’s when the Frau turned to me and said , ‘Why is your underwear on inside out? ‘.

Too much change, too soon can really put you off your game.
